The Discovery:

The thought of recovering the origional Lunar Orbiter data occoured arround1988 when a collegue of mine who was working at JPL at the time mentioned that she had heard that the last known set of Lunar Orbiter data tapes were discovered in storrage back east somewhere. The Jet Propultion Lab (JPL) was asked what they wanted to do with them. I thought it would be a great project to read the tapes and digitize the data then record it onto numerious CD's for anyone who wanted them. To do this however, required the knowledge of what type of tape drives recorded the data and how it was recorded. This lead to a long research project where I assembled everything I could concerning the Lunar Orbiter project..
